so, here's how our road trip began. we flew into albaquerque, new mexico and then caught an hour long shuttle bus to santa fe, new mexico where my aunt lives, and where we were to pick up the car. our first introduction to the sheer enormity of this vast country, was that it took us MUCH longer to get from boston to santa fe (via a 3 hour connection in chicago), then it does to get from boston to london. the flying time was exactly the same, thus the lack of non stop flights.
we spent a week in santa fe seeing the city, hanging with the auntie, and attempting to prepare our little red horse for the road trip ahead. how to sum up santa fe: a rediculously expensive large town that tries to be a city, dripping with oodles of very kitch native american memorobilia (i.e extra leather fringe, cowboy hats, fake turquiose, and pastel colored prints of cayotes howling to the moon) amidst incredibly old and beautiful adobe architecture, surrounded by strip malls on all sides. it is a mixture of retirees with too much money and extremely poor mestizos still reeling from colonization. throw in a few young idealists artist and outdoorsy types and there you have the weird place that is santa fe. i was shocked to find the cost of living there is significantly higher then in boston, and fairly close to that of new york city.
stay tuned for the next installment....
