Summer in January Part 2

on our way to run a bunch of errands yesterday (in the spirit of Saturday) we drove along memorial drive which takes you right along the charles river. it is one of the most beautiful spots in the Boston area. and yesterday was like a spring day with everyone out rollerblading and jogging in shorts and t-shirts. except it's January, and spring is not due for 3 more months. the irony of it all was getting in the way of my ability to appreciate the weather. and then i noticed two very disturbing things. 1) the trees were beginning to flower, as they normally do in April and 2) there are crocuses and dafodils starting to spring up all over the place, poking their little green noses out of the earth.

so in response to my horror at the complete dysfunction of our seasons, last night we brought ourselves to watch An Inconvenient Truth. to be honest, even though i had heard good things about this movie, i had been putting off watching it because i was convinced it would send me spiralling into a total depression....i.e, the earth is rapidly disintegrating from global warming thanks in large part to a bunch of greedy corporate assholes and the politicians who support them who refuse to take any action, and there is not a god damn thing any of us can do about it.

but it turns out this is exactly the kind of thinking this movie is trying to combat. it was an absolutely amazing film, and also devestating at the same time. i think everyone should be forced to watch this movie and i am convinced now (thanks to Mr. Gore) that every little thing each of us does will make a difference to stopping global warming. please please please check out the link to read about all of the little things we can do to help stop global warming. and for christ sake people, stop buying cars that get shit milage. i am shocked at the number of people I know and love, people who describe themselves as concerned about the earth and global warming, people who may even call themselves environmentalists, who are buying cars that routinely get 10-20 miles to the gallon. if you stop to think about it, that means with every mile you drive, you are doing 2-4 times more damage to the environment then if you were to own a car that gets 30-40 miles to the gallon. that's a whole lotta damage....

that's my preaching done for the day (and thank you for listening to it, if you happen to make it this far). thank you Al Gore for making this amazing film, and for having the balls to say what most of corporate america doesn't want us to know.
